Leaving the glass ceiling of religious sexism in shards

I was scheduled to proclaim the second reading today at my Roman Catholic parish.  Yesterday evening I finally sat down, pulled up the US Conference of Catholic Bishops website, and clicked into the scripture readings scheduled for today.  I scrolled down.

What I found for my lection was Ephesians 5:21-32 (I copy the publicly available NIV translation as found on biblegateway.com, since the US Catholic Bishops do not allow copying of the New American Bible translation without their written permission):

21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[b] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”[c] 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.

Then I read the Gospel lection.

The pericope chosen by the authors of the lectionary was this passage, also presented below in NIV translation, John 6:60-69:

60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”

61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[a] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”

66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.

67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.

68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”

Before you are tempted to lecture me about scriptural meaning, understand that I have read the Bible in its entirety.  I've read and compared numerous translations of varying authority; I've studied ancient manuscripts on which the translations are based in Greek, Hebrew, and Latin; I've done numerous hermeneutical studies of various passages of scripture; and I've had over half a dozen graduate and doctoral level courses in scripture.  I know my scripture.  I've also known these particular passages for a long time.

But last night, reading these two readings in succession, I perceived a very clear hermeneutical slant on the part of the men who strung these passages together for the twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time.

The hermeneutical slant woven for a 21st century audience says, in no uncertain terms, that women are to submit to men; and if this "teaching" is too "hard," if it "offends," then not only do the offended not believe (in) Jesus, but they are Jesus' betrayers, the ones who will turn their backs, no longer follow him, and (by implication) shout for his crucifixion.

Let's pull back the threadbare veil of meaning that the fashioners of the lectionary have laid on today's readings so we can be quite clear: women who reject submission to men in 2012, whether as wives to husbands or Catholic women to male clerics, are against Christ.  Anathema sit.

Now, allow me to pull back my veil and be even clearer: I will no longer stand by in the quiet shadows as the sin of sexism is thrust again and again against the women of the Roman Catholic Church.

The claim that women are or should in any way be inferior to men is evil.  It is this claim that perpetuates the abuse of women by men in every imaginable rape, from rape of the body to rape of legitimate calls to ordained ministry.

This must end NOW.

Roman Catholic clergy, all of you who homilized on anything other than the horrific sexism of today's string of readings, you should be ashamed.

I challenge every ordained member of the Roman Catholic hierarchy, from the lowliest deacon to the bishop of Rome, to examine his conscience, to make a public apology for the glut of sexism in which the hierarchy has so long engaged, and to make a public call for women to be restored to their rightful place of holy dignity--side by side with men, rather than in hierarchical relation to them.

I suppose I owe the authors of the lectionary a thank-you, however.  Were it not for today's readings, I might never have had the shattering revelation that my relationship with the divine cannot be contained within my Roman Catholic faith.  My faith is bigger, more embracing, more inclusive, and more perceptive than the religious sphere the Roman Catholic hierarchy attempts to dictate.

So thank you, lectionary creators.  Thank you for reminding me that a whole world of religious experience and holy encounters with the divine exist beyond your meager vision.  Thank you for showing me your golden calf in all its splendor, that I might be moved to break the tablets in my hands and ascend the mountain again to hear God's word anew.

My spouse points out that this may have been directly pointed at the various women's orders within the Church in America, as being wedded to Christ, being doubly ordered to submit themselves. However, it is probable that my daughter heard those words proclaimed at Mass, since I asked my family to take her so she could get experience before she starts attending a Catholic school in about a week. This saddens me, for while I value the educational system that the laypersons of the faith have built here, these men are actively undermining their work.

I am going to be speaking to my mother-in-law and confirming if this was actually read, and what her perception of my daughter's understanding was of the reading. You, my dear, are absolutely fabulous.

There's probably an echo of a directive at the nuns, but I suspect this was directed at the larger women's population in general. Feminists, you know.

I'd be very interested in what your mother-in-law has to say about it. It could have resulted in a really fruitful discussion. (Then again, your darling daughter might not have been able to hear the words at all, or might not have paid attention. I don't remember listening well at Mass at that age.)

And thank you. <3

Funny...I don't recall hearing verses 22-24 of the Ephesians reading at the Community of St. Peter yesterday morning even though the bulletin lists Ephesians 5:21-32. Do you think Father Marrone decided to omit part of the reading?

Donna, thank you so, so much for reading! I imagine RJM took the truncated option for the second reading, which is Eph 5:2a, 25-32 (allow me to copy NIV again):

2 and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[a] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”[b] 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.

That's the secondary option given in the lectionary and far less offensive, of course. But it doesn't change the primary option, nor its pairing with the gospel reading. It also doesn't change the hierarchical relation of husband to wife, where the husband is "making her holy," "cleansing her," rendering her "without blemish." In what context does that even make sense? Is she merely the animal, stupid part of the higher, intelligent male self, the part of oneself to to keep clean for ritual purposes? If, as this passage suggests, the woman is everything below the "head," then she has no lips, no eyes, no ears--nothing that Paul would have valued in his philosophical context. It also implies that a woman's value lies in being the other half of a man in a marriage, which would (unfortunately, but definitely) reflect the Greek philosophical perception that a woman was a lesser form of a man (see, for example, this brief passage translated from _Timaeus_, one of Plato's dialogues: "A brief mention may be made of the generation of other animals, so far as the subject admits of brevity; in this manner our argument will best attain a due proportion. On the subject of animals, then, the following remarks may be offered. Of the men who came into the world, those who were cowards or led unrighteous lives may with reason be supposed to have changed into the nature of women in the second generation.")

The shortened version is at least more subtle, but the message comes out to be the same in both. And then there's the gospel.

Anyway, I look forward to hearing RJM's take on yesterday's readings whenever it's posted. Lots of love to you. I hope you're well.

His homily focused on the Joshua reading, noting that it is impossible to proclaim hard and fast rules that will serve for all time--that our worlds change and rules guiding our lives have to be updated. He went on to relate the Joshua reading to the fiftieth anniversary of Vatican II. We are well and think about you often. Hug little Anastasia for me.

Oh, how I miss his homilies. And how appropriate that he would preach on Joshua in a way that still manages to address the problems of the second readings indirectly. I hope I can preach half as well as he does someday.

Lots of hugs to the little one for you. <3

Kate. Did you see what husbands have to do for their wives? They have to sacrifice to the point of death! They have to lead their families spiritually so all can be holy and attain heaven! They have to love their wives as much if not more than their own bodies! This reading is truly a "hard saying," but it's hard for husbands. I, for one, am happy to submit to this kind of treatment. I need my husband to lead me to holiness 'cuz I am surely not going to make it on my own.

Also as a side note, my parish priest spoke about the Eucharist and how we come to mass to pour out our love and thanksgiving to Jesus, the need for worthy reception of communion, and the need for more frequent confession. It was probably his best homily he has ever given.

Hey, Ms. Judy- Yes, I see what husbands have to do according to Paul. And I think it's really wonderful that you find this passage helpful and good--I can see how it would in your situation. But I don't find it helpful and good, on the whole. I can't. I'm not in a place in my life where I can accept it. I find it deeply offensive, not because of the positives, but because of the negatives. Much of the sexism of the RC church hierarchy derives from passages like this, and I won't silence my anger around that. Not anymore.

Ack, baby distracted me and I hit the reply button before I was really finished. What I meant to say in my second sentence, in case it's not clear enough, is that I understand that there's more than one valid way to read and understand and take in this passage, not just mine. I think your way of reading this is 100% valid and true and good; and I read it differently, and my way is also, in my opinion, just as valid and true and good. Neither of our opinions should be dismissed. What upsets me is that my opinion will be ignored or demonized, rather than taken seriously, by those who have the power to make changes with regard to the sexism in the church, despite the fact that I and those who feel the same way struggle so much to be heard by those people in power.

*sigh*
